Hannibal earns grant to repair stormwater sewer

The city of Hannibal recently received a grant to repair a stormwater sewer on Union Street, according to City Manager Lisa Peck.

The Missouri Department of Economic Development allocated a Community Development Block Grant of $743,436 to the city.

The city of Hannibal will be responsible for in-kind contributions of $80,500 and $1,000 in cash.

Peck said, “We appreciate the work of the Mark Twain Regional Council of Governments who helped us submit the emergency grant and are thankful that there are programs such as the Emergency CDBG program.”

Alan Bowen, council member for the Fourth Ward, was relieved to hear of the grant’s approval.

"I am happy to hear we can move forward on one of the bigger stormwater projects in Hannibal. Hopefully this is the beginning of getting ahead of these issues."

Peck said the city will be taking the next steps in the process soon. The work zone is near Stowell Elementary School.

A section of sidewalk failed earlier this year due to the stormwater sewer collapse.
